DUBLIN, Ireland: Statistics from Drinks Ireland indicate a 9.6 percent drop in alcohol consumption occurred in Ireland during the two year Covid pandemic of 2019 to 2021.
Further, the production of beer in Ireland fell by 46 percent during this period.
Officials noted that government imposed unit pricing on alcohol productions has raised costs to consumers and reduced sales, according to Eunan McKinney at Alcohol Action Ireland.
McKinney said as alcohol products have become more expensive, manufacturers have had to reduce the amount of alcohol in their products so that older prices can be maintained.
This is the second year that beer production has fallen in Ireland.
The statistics were gathered, based upon the number of pub closures throughout Ireland.
Sheena Horgan, CEO of Drinkaware, also noted that the number of people seeking to decrease their drinking has increased as the number of Irishmen making positive behavior change has gone up.
