NEW DELHI, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least eight persons were killed and many others injured after a bus carrying nearly 60 passengers fell into a deep gorge in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, local police said Sunday.
The mishap occurred in the state's Nilgiris district late on Saturday night, when the bus lost control while navigating the hairpin bend roads, a local policeman confirmed with Xinhua.
The ill-fated bus was on its way from Coonoor to the Tenkasi area as the passengers, who were on a tour to the scenic Ooty hill station, were returning home. The injured were admitted to a local hospital. Some of them were said to be in critical condition, according to the policeman.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the road mishap and announced monetary compensation to the families of the people who died in the accident, and the injured.
