Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday she had spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump and proposed a broad agreement encompassing security, immigration and trade.
Speaking at her daily press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum said the conversation took place Tuesday, after Trump cut short his attendance at the G7 Summit in Canada due to the Middle East crisis.
Given the size of the Mexican community in the United States, Sheinbaum emphasized the need for a formal and comprehensive framework for bilateral cooperation.
"I proposed a general agreement - one that covers security, immigration and trade," she said.
"I also highlighted the importance of recognizing Mexicans in the United States, families who have lived there for years and contribute to the country's economy."
Sheinbaum noted progress in border security and immigration, citing a "much more secure" border and "a significant drop" in migrant crossings.
She added that Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard would visit the United States on Friday to address pending trade matters, while security and immigration issues would be handled through the U.S. State Department.
Describing her call with Trump - their seventh since the start of his second term - as "good," Sheinbaum said Trump had apologized for canceling their G7 meeting and invited her to Washington for talks, though the visit would take place at a later date.
