WASHINGTON, D.C.: The U.S. government warned this week that Chinese spies are using trickery to try to hire current and former U.S. government workers.
The warning came from the National Counterintelligence and Security Center. It said Chinese intelligence agents are pretending to be job recruiters, consulting firms, or think tanks on social media and job sites to connect with people who worked for the U.S. government.
These fake job offers have become more advanced and are aimed at people looking for new jobs after working in the government. The center reminded government workers that even after they leave their jobs, they must still protect any secret information they know.
China's foreign ministry said it didn't know about these claims and accused the U.S. of spying on China instead. A Chinese spokesperson called the U.S. warning irresponsible and said the U.S. spies on other countries openly.
Earlier, Reuters reported that a secretive Chinese tech company was using several businesses to try to hire former U.S. government employees who had recently lost their jobs.
