New Delhi [India], August 6 (ANI):Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday expressed concern over the flood situation in Uttar Pradesh an d accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government of failing to provide assistance to the affected people.
Speaking to reporters, Akhilesh Yadav said that lives were being lost in various parts of the state due to floods and the state government 'does not care'.
'People are losing their lives due to floods in many places in UP. The state government do not care; they are not providing any help. I don't know how the government is functioning there,' the SP chief said.
On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that heavy rainfall over the last 10 to 12 days had caused significant flooding in the Yamuna and its tributaries, impacting 21 districts across the state.
The state government has announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for families who have lost members in the floods, along with a house under the Chief Minister's Housing Scheme for those whose homes were destroyed.
Additionally, speaking about Donald Trump's tariff threat to India, Akhilesh Yadav said, 'Videsh niti hi videsh chali gayi (Foreign Policy has gone foreign)... The government should create pressure in its own favour. If the government does so, it will see all standing by it.'
US President Donald Trump has said that he would increase the tariff charged on imports from India from the current rate of 25% 'very substantially' over the next 24 hours due to New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian oil, Reuters reported.
'They're fueling the war machine, and if they're going to do that, then I'm not going to be happy,' Trump told CNBC in an interview, according to Reuters.
According to the report, he added that the main sticking point with India was that its tariffs were too high, but did not provide a new tariff rate.
On Monday, Trump said that the United States will 'substantially raise' the tariff paid by India for buying 'massive amounts of Russian oil,' stating that much of the oil purchased from Moscow is being sold in the open market 'for big profits.'
Trump's announcement, made on his social media platform Truth Social, came days after he announced a 25 per cent reciprocal tariff on India and an unspecified penalty for importing oil from Russia. (ANI)
